An hour of hope and human connection
A special podcast conversation between the host, myself and Dr. Dylan Shanahan
Dear friends,
I’m deeply honored to share a heartfelt and profoundly moving episode of the Dear Souls podcast, where Dr. Dylan Shanahan and I join host Jacqueline Agramonte. It’s not often that we get to witness love, courage, and humanity in such raw form, but in this conversation, it’s right on the surface (and sometimes streaming down our cheeks).
Dylan, living with late-stage ALS, can only communicate through yes-and-no responses via eye movements. Jacqueline graciously begins our conversation with twenty yes-or-no questions, allowing Dylan to participate more directly. Then I have the privilege of speaking on Dylan’s behalf, reading excerpts from his book, and deepening his message about the grace and strength within the human spirit.
Together, we journey through Dylan’s incredible story, from his vibrant days as an athlete and scholar to his life now, marked by the remarkable transformation and wisdom he has cultivated through deep physical loss. We explore themes of resilience, the power of community, and the profound beauty found in acceptance and human connection. This conversation isn’t just about facing adversity; it’s a testament to the love and care we can offer each other—and ourselves—even in our most vulnerable moments.
Dylan’s spirit has inspired many, and his extraordinary book, Liberation of Being: Allowing Terminal Illness to Teach Us How to Live, continues to transform the way we think about life, agency, and purpose. If you’re longing for a respite from the heartbreak and division surrounding us—an hour of renewed faith in humanity—this episode offers a space to breathe, to hope, and to marvel at the depths of the human heart.
I hope you’ll join us in celebrating Dylan’s legacy, finding beauty even in the darkest corners, and remembering the quiet, enduring goodness within each of us.
With love,
Kimberly
Also! Join I Am ALS Scribes of Strength Team on November 21, 5pm-6pm EST as they talk with Dylan about living his purpose and being more, while doing less. All are welcome to this special event!
A life lesson in all the complexities we have yet to understand about the art being human. Dylan carries pure light within him seemingly ignited by human resilience . Thank you Kimberly for allowing me to set sail on this journey. I can only imagine how Dylan has changed your life. I know he has changed mine. I see I am not the only one; the word perspective , when I am in need of, I will remember Dylan . I can think of no higher compliment than to say , his name will be synonymous with the indomitable power of the human spirit.
My god, Dylan's answer to whether he would give up all he's learned was just so honest and humble and profound. I don't think it'll ever leave me. I'm so grateful that these recordings exist. It's such a privilege to spend time with him, and you, love.
